National Mathematics day

“ Pure mathematics is the world's best game.”

Every December 22 is celebrated as National Mathematics day to mark the birth anniversary of great Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. The day was declared was Indian Government, announced by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Madras University on 26 February 2012, during the opening ceremony of the 125th anniversary celebration of the birth of Srinivasa Ramanujan, the Indian mathematical genius (22 Dec 1887- 26 Apr 1920).

Ramanujan was born into an Iyengar Brahmin family in Erode, Tamil Nadu (then Madras Presidency) in 1887. He had excelled in trigonometry at age 12, despite lacking a formal education, and had developed many theorems by himself. Ramanujan became eligible for a scholarship to study at the Government Arts College, Kumbakonam, after completing secondary school in 1904, but was unable to secure the same because in other subjects he did not do well.

Srinivasa Ramanujan, the legendary mathematician, made outstanding contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series and constant fractions.

On 22 December 2022, Our educators organised a Quiz Competition on "National Mathematics Day" at Gajera school ,Sachin.

Quiz competitions enable students to think from different angles or simply ‘to think out of the box’. It promotes a healthy involvement amongst participants. We held inter house competition and four houses were there. There names were like Srinivasa Ramanujan, Brahma Gupta , Aryabhatta and Pytha Goras.

The preliminary round was held in the classes where the students were asked ten questions. The ones who gave the most correct answers were chosen to proceed to the next round. Each participating team had two highest achievers from their class. It was held in assembly area where all sections of classes of V to VII gathered to attend the competition.

They were informed of the competition’s rules. There were two rounds of the competition in which five questions were asked from each team. Each team had to answer within the given time limit. If the team members couldn’t answer, the same question was asked from the audience.

After a tough final round, the result was announced by the judges and certificates were awarded to the well deserved winners. Srinivasa Ramanujan team won the competition .

Students were highly motivated and it turned out to be quite a productive activity which enhanced logical thinking skills .

The main motive and purpose to held this competition was to improve the thinking level of the students . It also gives Interactive platforms, Scope of Learning, Team Work and Healthy Competition, Exposure and Rewards also. Mathematicians like to talk about the beauty of mathematics. This beauty is seen in the harmony, patterns, and structures of numbers and forms – classical ideals of balance and symmetry.
